A horizontal route cannot simply be squeezed into a vertical frame. The useful area is narrower, interface overlays occupy the top and bottom, and a globe that looks spacious on desktop can become unreadable on a phone.
Compose for the narrow safe area
Select 9:16 before evaluating the camera. Keep route endpoints away from the extreme top and bottom because captions, account names and platform controls can cover them. Preview at actual phone width rather than trusting a large desktop preview.
For intercontinental arcs, overview camera usually communicates more geography. Follow camera can feel energetic on shorter legs, but the endpoint label needs enough time on screen to be understood.
Use fewer words and stronger contrast
A route title should identify the journey, not repeat the full itinerary. Prefer “Santiago to Tokyo” over a sentence. A short subtitle can add the year or series name.
Cinematic and space backgrounds offer reliable contrast. If the final reel uses bright footage behind the map, export with chroma and add a subtle shadow or dark plate after keying.
Match the route to the edit rhythm
Vertical travel videos are often cut quickly, but geography still needs reading time. Start with the origin visible, let the vehicle movement carry the transition, and cut after the destination has settled. Test with captions enabled because they change the available visual space.
